HYDROELECTRIC POWER STATIONS

Our total Hydro schemes’ generation capacity is 566MW at full capacity, which is enough to power nearly 600,000 homes. Hydropower (or water power) is derived from the energy of falling or fast running water and has been used as a renewable energy source since ancient times.

We have two types of scheme in our Hydro Group; our Cruachan pumped storage facility and our Lanark and Galloway schemes, which are ‘run of river’ hydro with multiple dams and generating stations. As more renewable energy is being generated in the UK, our stations are used to help balance the national grid and to assist at peak demand times.
